Helen Thanopoulou

Helen Thanopoulou is Professor at the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport, University of the Aegean, which she joined in 2003. She holds a degree in economics from the National University of Athens, a postgraduate diploma (DEA) in development economics from the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne), and a doctorate in maritime studies from the University of Piraeus.

She previously taught at the University of Piraeus and spent eight years at Cardiff University and Cardiff Business School as Lecturer and later Senior Lecturer, directing its shipping postgraduate programmes from 1999. She was a council member of the International Association of Maritime Economists from 2008 to 2010.

She spoke at five Mare Forum events between 2023 and 2026: the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th Mare Forum Mykonos and the 1st Mare Forum Chios.
