Dr. Anil Sharma is President and CEO of GMS. He worked as a professor of global business and marketing before moving into the maritime industry in the early 1990s, when he began purchasing US Maritime Administration (MARAD) vessels on behalf of Indian recyclers who faced restrictions on international bidding. He went on to build GMS into the world's largest cash buyer of vessels for recycling, and in 1993 assisted the Russian government with the safe disposal of surplus naval vessels. He is credited with helping shift industry terminology from 'ship breaking' to 'ship recycling'.
He spoke at 20 Mare Forum events between 2011 and 2019, moderating the 5th Mare Forum Brazil 2015 and appearing as a panellist across Mare Forum Italy, Ship Finance, Malta, Oslo, Singapore, Dubai, the UAE and Indonesia.
