Supply and demand - Maintaining skills bases
More than mariners - driving up brain power
The debate on the European maritime skills base has focussed attention on the increasing reliance on external manpower and possible vulnerabilities. The lessons of the BIMCO/ISF manpower update are being digested and how are these being reflected in training and recruitment. Is there a need for an academic enhancement of sea skills ? Career mapping and ship-shore progression ? Upgrading the image of seafarers and the need for better treatment. Is criminalisation a serious deterrent to recruitment? How can the decline in the number of Europeans entering certain maritime professions be reversed and the safety and attractiveness of jobs ensured?

How can better working conditions, wages and safety be combined with sectoral competitiveness?

How can the quality of education, training and certification be assured?
How the ILO on the new Convention, it will affect the industry
