1ST EUROPEAN MARITIME RESEARCH POLICY
CONFERENCE
Thursday 18 October 2007 Hilton Hotel Brussels
PAPERS & PRESENTATIONS
European Maritime Research Policy is on course The 1st European Maritime Research Policy Conference, which took place on 18 October in Brussels, attracted a large and high-level audience. This not only underscores the successful efforts of the various European maritime organizations to collaborate at the European level, but it also fits seamlessly into the European Commission’s communication on an Integrated European Maritime Policy which was launched last week. European Commissioner for Research, Potocnik who delivered the keynote address, expressed his and the Commission’s commitment to align the many EU policies in order to create the framework conditions for the maritime and marine industries to remain global leaders and to contribute not only to the objectives of the Lisbon agenda, but also to a truly integrated European Research Area. The European Technology Platform (ETP) Waterborne, handed over its third research strategy document titled “Implementation Route Map” to the Commissioner, and launched at the same time the ambitious project of a Maritime Knowledge and Innovation Community, as part of a future European Institute of Technology. The chairman of the conference, and chairman of the General Assembly of the ETP Waterborne, Govert Hamers, stressed the importance of more transparency and cooperation with the maritime research programmes of the member states. “It is our ambition to become a truly integrated maritime research community of world class and an inspiring example for the young academics who have to make their professional choices” he added. Niko Wijnolst, co-chairman of the conference, and chairman of the European Network of Maritime Clusters stated that the existing national maritime clusters in many European countries can be important enablers when integrating the members states in the ETP Watreborne initiatives.
